Tormod Heier is professor of military strategy and operations, head of research at Staff School, professor-II at Høgskolen i Inlandet, and docent at Försvarshögskolani Stockholm. Heier has 32 years as an officer in the Armed Forces, including 15 years as a lieutenant colonel in the Army.
As an officer, he worked, among other things, in the Army's Brigade North at Skjold and Setermoen, in the Intelligence Service at Lutvann, in the Ministry of Defense in Oslo and in Mazar-e-Sharif, northern Afghanistan. Heier has one doctorate and two master's degrees in Political Science and War Studies respectively from the University of Oslo and King's College, London. He has published a number of books, including on Norwegian and European defense and security policy, but also on social science method and strategic competence management. Heier regularly gives lectures and lectures for universities and organizations around the country, including the Chiefs Course at the Norwegian Defense Academy.
Heier is regularly used as an expert member for NOKUT's sister organizations in Sweden and Denmark in connection with quality assurance of the military education at the Swedish and Danish defense colleges. He is a member of No to Atomic Weapons' professional council committee, Norway Defense & Aerospace Cluster (NDAC) and FFI's Advisory Board on the research program "Protection of society". Heier was a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford in 2017, and was awarded the Ossietzky prize by Norwegian PEN for outstanding efforts in freedom of expression in the same year.
